EUR vs FIN vs Industrial Pallets

Sizes, weight limits, and how many fit in a truck

The Five Pallet Types You Need to Know

European road freight uses a handful of standardized pallet sizes. Knowing the differences matters because it directly affects how many you can fit on a truck and how much you pay for transport.

TypeSize (mm)HeightMax loadPallet weightPer trailer

FIN / EUR61000 × 1200144 mm1,850 kg30 kg26

EUR Pallet (EPAL) — 800 × 1200mm

The most common pallet in Europe. Managed by the European Pallet Association (EPAL). Used across all industries from automotive to food. EPAL pallets are exchangeable — you can swap them at delivery without cost, which is why they dominate European logistics.

  • Best for: General cargo, FMCG, retail distribution
  • Fits: 33 per standard 13.6m trailer (3 across, 11 rows)
  • LDM: 0.4 per pallet
  • Exchange: Yes — EPAL exchange pool across Europe

FIN Pallet (EUR6) — 1000 × 1200mm

Standard in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia). 25% wider than an EUR pallet, which means it carries more cargo but fewer fit per truck. Not part of the EPAL exchange pool.

  • Best for: Nordic/Baltic trade routes, heavy goods, paper/pulp industry
  • Fits: 26 per trailer (2 across, 13 rows)
  • LDM: 0.5 per pallet
  • Exchange: FIN pallet pool (separate from EPAL)

When to Use Which?

Use EUR pallets when:

  • Shipping within Western/Central Europe
  • You need pallet exchange at delivery
  • Your warehouse racking is set up for 800mm width
  • You want to maximize pallets per truck (33 vs 26)

Use FIN pallets when:

  • Trading with Nordic countries or Baltics
  • Your product is heavy and needs the higher weight limit (1,850 kg)
  • Your product dimensions fit better on 1000mm width
  • The receiver's warehouse uses FIN racking

EUR to FIN Conversion

When you need to convert between pallet types for quoting:

  • 1 FIN pallet = 1.25 EUR pallets (by LDM: 0.5 ÷ 0.4 = 1.25)
  • 1 EUR pallet = 0.8 FIN pallets
  • 26 FIN pallets = 33 EUR pallets (both = full trailer)

Maximum Loaded Height

The internal height of a standard trailer is 2,700mm (2,670mm usable). With a 144mm pallet height, the maximum cargo height on the pallet is:

  • Standard trailer: 2,700 - 144 = 2,556mm cargo height
  • Mega trailer: 3,000 - 144 = 2,856mm cargo height

Most retailers and warehouses limit pallet height to 1,800mm or 2,000mm including the pallet, to allow safe stacking of two pallets high.
