How to Calculate CBM
CBM (Cubic Meter) is the standard measurement of volume used in international shipping. To calculate CBM:
CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m)
For multiple identical items, multiply the CBM per unit by the quantity.
Dimensional Weight vs Actual Weight
Carriers charge based on whichever is greater: actual weight or dimensional (volumetric) weight. The DIM weight divisor varies by transport mode:
- Road freight: ÷ 3,000 (cm) — 1 CBM = 333 kg
- Air freight: ÷ 6,000 (cm) — 1 CBM = 167 kg
- Sea freight: 1 CBM = 1,000 kg (1 tonne)
- Courier/parcel: ÷ 5,000 (cm) — 1 CBM = 200 kg
CBM to LDM Conversion
To estimate loading meters from CBM: divide the CBM by the trailer cross-section area (width × cargo height). For a standard trailer (2.4m wide) with 1.5m cargo height: 1 CBM ≈ 0.28 LDM.
